Community & Youth Service

Each year, Classic City Rotary takes part in over 30 different hands-on service activities benefitting local Athens-area nonprofits and causes. Some projects are one-time only, while others take place regularly throughout and across years. Our Service subcommittee helps identify and coordinate these projects in consultation with the club’s President and Board.

Typically, recurring community service activities include, for instance: book distributions with Books for Keeps; Adopt-a-Highway roadside cleanups; providing meals via Our Daily Bread; holding cookouts and parties for residents at Denney Tower; planting flowers with KACCB; mulching at Advantage Behavioral for the MLK Day of Service; bell ringing for Salvation Army; “Bring One for the Chipper” Christmas tree recycling; creating welcome baskets for inbound UGA exchange students; sponsoring the Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year awards; and providing Christmas presents for the Athens Community Council on Aging Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program.

Classic City Rotary also sponsors the Athens Academy Interact Club and the EarlyAct Club at JJ Harris Elementary. We also support a “Four-Way Test” essay contest at JJ Harris; recognize STAR Students from Athens-area high schools; and sponsor and judge for the “Laws of Life” essay competition.
